Elsewhere / in past tense of us begins with the feeling of having everything while knowing it may be time to leave. The work explores how tenderness persists inside that contradiction. Through contemporary choreography and live sonic composition, Uwazi Zamani explores how bodies register attachment, and what happens when the desire to remain meets the need to go. Fragments of the sound of Motown and Detroit soul surface within electronic textures, making memory audible as the dancers navigate a world already beginning to change. The work considers departure as an uneven process: the body can continue reaching toward a place, or a person, even as it moves away.
Created for TU Dance through the 2026–27 Toni Pierce-Sands Choreographic Initiative, for which Uwazi Zamani is the inaugural recipient. The premiere is scheduled for December 4–6, 2026, at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis.
